RWAMAGANA - About nine people in Nyakaliro sector, Rwamagana district have been arrested and detained at Nzige Police Station over allegedly promoting genocide ideology among residents.
The Mayor, Valens Ntezirembo, confirmed the arrests, saying the group is among suspects still harboring what he termed as ‘negative ideology’ in Nyakaliro.
“We received reports that there are some people orchestrating ethnic hatred in Nyakaliro. We alerted the police and the suspects are now being held,” said the Mayor.
Pierre Celestin Bizumuremyi, the Sector Executive Secretary, condemned the incident, noting that there is still need to sensitize the residents on unity and reconciliation.
“We are working hard to put some sense in them so that they can reform,” he added.
Bizumurenyi said that the suspects have been stoning houses and stealing property belonging to survivors.
Jean Claude Munyaneza, a resident of the neighboring Karenge sector, told The New Times that ethnic hatred is prevalent in Nyakaliro Sector.
“These are people who still have the old ethnic ideology against their colleagues within Nyakaliro,” he said.
According to the security authorities in the district, the suspects will soon be brought before justice, to answer to charges related to genocide ideology.
They face between 10 and 20 years in jail upon conviction.
