KAMONYI - Police has warned motorists against over speeding and breaching road safety rules in a move to reduce the number of accidents along  the Butare-Kigali highway.

Supt. Etienne Rutayisire, the Kamonyi District Police Commander, said this last week while launching the use of new speed governors which are expected to curb over speeding along this highway.

It was noted during the launch that most accidents have been caused by over speeding and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police noted that most members of Kamonyi motorbike operator’s association lack driving permits, warning that a clamp down will soon be carried out.

However, motorbike operators said lack of permits was caused by difficulties encountered in attaining them and asked Police to streamline the process of acquiring one.

“We don’t have permits because the driving tests are held far away. it is expensive and sometimes we are not registered even when we make arrangements to travel to the testing sites,” Jean Baptiste Nsenginyumva said.

The Kamonyi Mayor, Jacques Rutsinga, said that the residents should also take responsibility of ensuring road safety.
