APR players won the ‘Guma Guma’ tennis tournament that climaxed on Saturday.
The four-day competition for none professionals, started on Wednesday last week at Cercle Sportif, attracting 32 players from four local clubs, Nyarutarama, APR, Amahoro Stadium and CSK.
APR’s Dr. Colonel Charles Rudakubana and Captain Fidel Bayama pulled off semifinal upset when they defeated Cercle Sportif’s Joseph Habineza [the Sports Minister] and Innocent Muhima 6-2, 6-2.
In the other semifinal clash, Nyarutarama’s Sven Piederiet [Director General of Bralirwa] and Ben Kalkman [Director General of Banque Populaire du Rwanda] beat APR’s Jansi Karanguza and Musoni 6-2, 7-6.
In the final, Dr. Rudakubana and Capt. Bayama knocked out Piederiet and Kalkman 6-2, 6-4.
The event was organised by the ministry of sports and culture, and sponsored by Bralirwa, which injected in Rwf4.1 millions.
In his previous interview with Times Sport, Bralirwa’s Piederiet said the Company has embarked on different activities in the country as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, and that the first phase was sports.
“We sponsored the tennis tournament to promote sports in the country, while engaging opinion leaders and our consumers into the enjoyment of our drinks,” he said.
“It’s good for Bralirwa to celebrate its 50th anniversary, while promoting sports in the country, and associating it with leisure and pleasure,” the Minister Habineza said.
The event, which was held at Kivu Serena hotel, was entertained by local artists including The Ben and Meddy.
