RWAMAGANA - A 73-year old man who allegedly defiled a 5-year old infant has been arrested and detained at Nzige Police Station in Rwamagana District.
Joseph Sibomana, is said to have committed the crime on Monday, in Murama cell, Nzige sector.
He allegedly attacked the infant in the bush where she had gone to untie a goat that was grazing.
According to the infant’s parents the accused lured the victim with an offer of Rwf50.
The child was taken to Rwamagana Hospital for medical tests, whose results are yet to be released.
After the arrest, the suspect admitted to the crime.
The Executive Secretary of Nzige Sector, Pierre Claver Mugabushaka, castigated the incident, and vowed to prevent similar incidences in the community.
“There is need to mobilise parents to take extra care of their children. The abused child had been left by parents until 6.00pm.
They claim that they had gone for prayers in the Church. But this is wrong since they had in effect left the children exposed to such abuses,” he said.
He called on the media to always expose such crimes.
“We shall be exposing all who abuse children to the media, as one way of deterring potential criminals.
The media is a very important tool to fight child abuse and other crimes,” he added.
If convicted the suspect faces life imprisonment as the maximum penalty according to the penal code.
