Drama as ATRACO boss dissolves association committee

KARONGI - The chairman of the Association of Commuter Taxi Drivers (ATRACO), Col Dodo Twahirwa, has dissolved the association’s Karongi District leadership over alleged mismanagement and embezzlement of funds.

KARONGI - The chairman of the Association of Commuter Taxi Drivers (ATRACO), Col Dodo Twahirwa, has dissolved the association’s Karongi District leadership over alleged mismanagement and embezzlement of funds.

Drama ensued on Monday evening, as the association’s chairman, Kassim Muhayimana, failed to defend himself, subsequently throwing a fully packed room into prolonged laughter.

Muhayimana is also accused of failing to effectively execute his duties for the last three years of his tenure and new members of the association were  being charged illegal fees.

“It is very unfortunate that he has been doing all this behind our back yet he earns more than five times each of the drivers earns. From now and henceforth he is no longer your leader,” Col Dodo said.

During the meeting, Innocent Bizimungu was announced chairman and a new committee was formed.

Col Dodo warned Muhayimana’s successor against involvement in dubious acts that he said might tarnish the good image of the association.

Meanwhile, the top management of ATRACO is in final stages of transforming the national transport body into a cooperative society.

Dodo, explained that ATRACO has for the past years operated as a trade union.

“We have finalised a feasibility study and wide consultations with our lawyers and other experts are also underway,” Dodo said.
