KIGALI - Kigali City Council will next month embark on a project to adjust some of the roads where traffic has been on the increase.

The roads to be upgraded include the stretch from Kigali main roundabout that runs past the Kimihurura roundabout and the Remera junction towards the airport.

The City Mayor Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kakira, confirmed the development and said that the works are set to begin next month.

In solving the growing traffic jams, mainly experienced during peak hours, along the Remera–Kimihurura road, the city plans to replace the Giporoso and Gisimenti traffic lights with roundabouts for the smooth flow of traffic.

“Traffic on the Remera-Kanombe airport road has increased in recent years, mostly due to the residential areas that have sprung up in areas like Kimironko and others which had not been planned for.

The need to make adjustments on this road is paramount,” said Kirabo.

The road from the city centre roundabout would also be adjusted, with double lanes on both sides.
The Kanombe airport–Military barracks road is also among those to be repaired in the project that begins next month.

A Chinese company, China Roads and Bridges Corporation, has been contracted to do the works.
