How important is debating in schools?

Debate is not wastage of time since one gets more ideas whenever people debate on a particular motion. The “Rwanda should attain middle income status by 2020” has helped me learn a lot of things in economics and entrepreneurship that I did not know before. I encourage my fellow students to take up debating, so that they can give others ideas on what they feel is right or wrong.

I started debating when I was in Primary Four in Uganda and when I moved here I just continued from where I had stopped. At school the debating club is very popular and students try their best to make it and represent the school on such debates. Debating helps to improve one’s self confidence and teachers should support students to debate more and more.

Debates are very good at helping students to become confident when speaking and arguing. I think they help to prepare one to become a member of parliament for example. My ambition is to become a member of parliament or a journalist.
