A popular local band, ‘Salus Populi’, on Friday entertained Butare residents to a live top notch musical performance, in a relief from the curtain raiser, at the National University of Rwanda’s main auditorium.
Shimmering from their recent return from Algeria for the African Music and Dance Festival, the university based music band performed much revered ‘Igisope’ (Rwandan oldies) music, and revellers danced to the tunes till wee hours of the morning.
The band also played illustrious tracks by ‘Impala’ and ‘Rangira’ bands, and renditions of music by artistes, like Bob Marley.
Despite charging Rwf 1000, the entrance fee that was considered expensive, especially for university students, concertgoers continued to flock the venue in huge numbers.
The major highlight of the long musical night was the fashion show that depicted dress fashions in Rwanda from the 50’s to today. Tight fitting pants for men and overflowing dresses for women depicted the glorious past designs.
If the enthusiasm of the crowd is to go by, ‘playback’ music performers are in for a shock should they venture into performing at the University. Live music wins hearts here, ‘playbacks’ never!
