How compatible are you really?

Dear Guy, I always hear about the difference between we have similar qualities and compatibility.

Dear Guy,

I always hear about the difference between we have similar qualities and compatibility. The other day my boyfriend said we don’t have much in common but we are compatible. I have always thought it was the same thing, but he claims they are different.

What do you think?

Dear Erica
,

Well, I think that your boyfriend is a genius! Seriously though, I think that many women (and men) believe that, to be a good couple, you have to like the same things. In my experience, I’ve found that NOT to be true. For example, if I like to watch football and my girlfriend doesn’t, would that mean our relationship is built on sand? What about when you like to take long evening walks and he prefers to lie on the sofa after work? Should you call off the engagement? Methinks not. We must be able to differentiate those differences that make us individuals, and those commonalities that make us a couple. For example, things that make people compatible are often things like their core values, their characters, their views on the future, religious views, life goals etc.  Not what they watch on TV or what they listen to on their iPods.
