Television is very good entertainment for all of us including children if watched with limitations. It can be entertaining and educative and it can also open up a new world for children giving them a chance to travel the globe without actually getting on a plane!
They learn about different cultures and also gain exposure to ideas they may never encounter in their own communities. However, television can also affect child’s health, behavior in a negative way.
Television can affect a child both socially and emotionally because they tend to watch different programs some of which are violent or sexual. These programs trigger fear, worry and also suspicion which increase tendencies to aggressive behavior in children.
Scenes with alcohol, cigarettes and drugs also affect children. Is it any wonder that the number of young people doing drugs and alcohol is alarming?
It affects creativity and language skills partly because the English some of these people on TV use isn’t proper and also the fact that children spend more time on TV and less time reading. Language skills are best taught through reading.
It is because of TV that children fall asleep in class or fail to catch on with what is being taught. It slows down their general performance.
Parents need to find solutions and ways to cut down on TV. Plan for the programs you understand your kids like. Make sure the programme is sex, drug, alcohol, violence, nudity and bad language free! Movies like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter are ideal for children. Encourage them to watch educative programmes like The Discovery Channel and even news. Most kids hate watching the news but it is up to a parent to encourage a child to keep up with what’s current.
