Andres Iniesta has reached Emilio Butragueno’s record of featuring in 50 unbeaten La Liga matches consecutively after Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Sevilla on Saturday.

The attacking midfielder has now tasted victory in 42 of the past 50 matches in the Primera Division in which he has featured, with the remaining eight ending in draws.

His last defeat came at the start of last season, where Barca succumbed to a 2-0 reverse against Hercules in only the second match of the 2010-11 campaign.

However, Iniesta has now put himself on par with the Real Madrid legend Butragueno. The former striker had won 34 and drawn 16 of his positive 50-game streak between 1987 and 1989.

The 27-year-old playmaker now has the chance to break the record against Granada on Tuesday, when the new boys make the trip to Camp Nou.

A Xavi free kick and an exquisite lob from Lionel Messi fired Barcelona to a 2-0 win at Sevilla that cut Real Madrid’s lead at the top of La Liga back to seven points on Saturday.

Xavi curled a shot over wall after 18 minutes and World Player of the Year Messi bagged his 31st of the league campaign soon after.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola sounded a more pessimistic note when he was asked about the side’s chances of catching Real to win their fourth consecutive league crown.

“You should forget about this league, we aren’t going to win it,” he told reporters.
