Valentine’s Day, the most romantic of days is here! It’s that time of the year when love fills the air; couples shower each other with gifts and singles get to feel like they are the inauspicious second class people.
Many single men and women worldwide see Valentines Day as the day, which points out their relationship status and some do not wish to be reminded of it. The thought of spending the entire valentines evening at home alone or going out with a group of single friends just to be surrounded by lovebirds is enough to make them want to press the fast-forward button to , let’s say the 17th when the once fresh valentines flowers are wilted.
Well, life for singles was that hard, till some lone chap introduced ‘Singles Awareness Day”. Single awareness day is a humorous holiday, celebrated on February 14th and it serves as an alternative to Valentine’s Day for people who are single—which means not romantically involved.
On Singles Awareness Day, the single’s gather to celebrate their single status. Some want to remind romantic couples that they don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate life.
You see, our culture is bent towards couples, and being single is sometimes viewed as something odd, but in the last few decades the rise in divorce rates and other changes in society have fueled more single people than ever before.
Therefore, when this day cropped up, singles reached out for it with massive energy. Common activities during this day include, single events, meeting out for a drink, treating oneself to popular activities, gathering of family and friends, and gift giving for oneself. On this day many people wear green, as it is considered to be the ‘opposite’ of red.
To all my single people out there, have a lovely Single Awareness Day. Rather than feel down on Valentine’s Day, celebrate the strengths and achievements that testify to you being a whole and health some person, a person who has space for love should it ever come along .
If people choose to rub your ‘singlehood’ in your face on Valentine’s Day, be strong and reply with compassion that being single isn’t a crime. You get to choose how you want to live without having to make compromises, meals, or even the bed.
