When Malia and Sasha, President Obama’s daughters got a Portuguese Water dog as a gift from their dad, they were more than excited to receive it. The little girls basically loved its little dark eyes and black coat. This is what makes a Portuguese water dog exclusively unique from other dogs.
The Portuguese water dog originated from Portugal and are so famous for swimming and fishing hence the name-Portuguese Water dog.
These water dogs were first recorded in 1297. This was in a monk’s report of a drowning sailor who had been pulled from the sea by a dog with a “black coat.”
The lovely black coat (fur) grows at a high rate. Its fur is always trimmed to only one inch, to make sure that these pretty animals look smart and stay warm at the same time. Its coat can be flat, wavy, shiny or a thick open curl.
The Portuguese water dog is muscular and medium sized. Most of them are black though there are some dogs that are white, brown, silver or black with white markings.
Their round heads and heart shaped ears hanging below their heads give these dogs a unique look. These animals have thick tails and straight legs with more webbing between the toes than other dog breeds.
This is what makes them the best swimmers. They are credited for being lively, sensible and loyal and when it comes to people, they love children the most. They also get along well with other dogs and pets without any problem except for the cats.
Portuguese water dogs are very intelligent and learn instructions so fast. Like people, they are very emotional and sensitive to the tone one’s voice. Owners need to be calm but authoritative while addressing them.
Portuguese water dogs have a sense of humor, love and want too much attention especially among many people. They make good watch dogs. These beautiful dogs feed on beef products and milk.
