Business journalists challenged to report accurately

Business and economy reporters have been challenged to always cross-check facts and figures to ensure accurate information is given to the public. John Rwangombwa, the National Bank of Rwanda chief, said journalists who report on business and economy issues must have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to report efficiently and impactfully. Rwangombwa was speaking during a two-day training workshop for business reporters organised by Central Bank and Media High Council in Kigali on Friday. The governor said some business reporters misrepresent the information they get from institutions like the central bank, noting that most of them do not understand their area of specialisation. Prof Thomas Kigabo, the chief economist at National Bank of Rwanda, said the training is aimed at equipping business journalists with basic knowledge and skills in economy and business reporting. Kigabo said it is important to equip business reporters with requisite skills to help them improve their reporting on the sector. He said some writers do not understand the area, the economical terms used in monetary policy, financial institution, financial markets and payment systems. Constantin Tuyishimire, a radio reporter, said the skills gained will help him to improve reporting on business and economy issues going forward. business@newtimes.co.rw
