Grand Cycling Tour of Algeria: Areruya wins Circuit International de Constantine

Mehari Tesfatsion (Eri) + 1:44 Rwanda international Joseph Areruya has made history after winning the Circuit International de Constantine on Saturday, becoming the first Rwandan to win a stage at the 13th Grand Cycling Tour of Algeria. The 20-year-old youngster Areruya also became the first rider to challenge NASR Pro Cycling Team- Dubai riders, who had previously won the first eight stages of the four-week long race series since the Tour begun on March 4. Areruya also topped the U23 category while compatriot Jean Claude Uwizeye, who won a silver medal at this year’s African Road Championship in Morocco, finished third in the age category. The one-day Circuit International de Constantine was made up of 15 laps (7km each), Areruya led the peloton for almost the entire race before displaying his sprinting strength to cross the finish-line 1 minute and 25 seconds ahead of Essaid Abelouache of NASR- Dubia. Algerian Mansouri Abderrahmane finished third while Team Rwanda’s Jean Claude Uwizeye took fourth position. Team Rwanda other riders namely; Patrick Byukusenge (captain), Joseph Biziyaremye, Jeremie Karegeya and Samuel failed to finish the race. Out of 45 riders who started the race, only 13 completed.
