Editor, RE: “Nyange students heroic legacy lives on” (The New Times, February 1). Among the very many incidents of heroism, one which will always stand out and live on, is that displayed by the young students of Nyange Secondary School in Western Provinces Ngororero District. Driving through the Western Province, this famous school stands as a testimony to those six innocent young boys and girls who were brutally murdered during those dark days of March 1997. The manner in which these students—like Marie-Chantal Mujawamahoro, Sylvestre Bizimana and Phanuel Sindayiheba (now 39)—stood united against the Interahamwe militiamen is commendable. The Governments initiative to construct a Heroes Monument at Nyange Secondary School will definitely go a long way in making this critical part of the country’s history live forever. The monument will serve as a constant reminder that unity is strength and the heroic deeds of the students in not separating themselves on the basis of ethnicity will serve as a lesson for many for generations to come.
