RMC scoops global award for fostering ethical journalism

Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), the country’s media self-regulatory body, was on Tuesday honoured with a global prize for promoting ethical and professional journalism. The recognition was bestowed by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) at a forum in Geneva, Switzerland. A project submitted by RMC was voted the best by a jury after it had been shortlisted among top three projects. The winning project, titled ‘Tackling Ethical Dimensions of Online Media Content through Self-regulation’, was in the category of ‘Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society’. “After two phases of evaluation, RMC’s project made it to the nomination stage which included seven projects. It’s the voting which saw it make it to the top three,” the commission said in a statement released on Tuesday. RMC was established in 2013. WSIS represents the globe’s largest annual gathering of development oriented ICT, and fosters aspects like information exchange, creation of knowledge, sharing of best practices, among others. The WSIS provides a platform to identify and showcase success stories and models that could be easily replicated. The summit started on Monday and will end on Friday.
