'Abakambwe' to play UR-Huye in cricket friendly

Abakambwe [Old timers], a team largely composed of former cricket players will reverse back the years when they play a youthful National University of Rwanda’s College of Arts and Sciences side on November 7 in Huye. Rwanda cricket federation is working very hard to widen the base of cricket in the country and more so in schools—from primary to higher institutions of learning. In the effort to achieve this, emphasis has been put to the young generation and especially through their elders known as Abakambwe [Old timers]. According to the Rwanda Cricket Association General Manager Joshua Mwanja, the friendly game is meant to continue engaging young people in the sport. He said: “We want more and more people in the cricket fraternity and the only way we can do it is through the youth and having them play constantly.” Abakambwe, whose members are the pioneers of cricket in Rwanda, every year organize four friendlies games against Umubano the conservative party from UK, Abagurusi from Uganda, Rwanda Media and Universities. “Old timers are no-longer active in the game and we still need them to guide the upcoming stars therefore, games like the one on November 7 will help us keep them on board and very involved,” noted RCA president Charles Haba.
