Anti-GBV campaign goes to Bugesera

Rwanda National Police campaign against Gender Based Violence and child abuse continued yesterday in Nyamata, Bugesera District with a call on residents to strengthen cooperation in the ongoing countrywide drive to fight and prevent the vice. The campaign is being conducted under the theme; “Act Together in Prevention and Response to GBV and Child Abuse.” Addressing Nyamata residents, the Executive Secretary of the Eastern Province, Jean Marie Vianny Makombe, decried child abuse and cases of domestic violence among spouses in the province but said the campaign would help stem the vice. Police Commissioner for Operations, Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel Butera, said GBV is among the three most common crimes committed in the country, and reaffirmed Police commitment to fight and prevent it. Butera urged students who were present at Nyamata youth friend center campaign ground, to be characterised by good morals and values. He also warned the public against human trafficking and other criminal acts. Bugesera District Mayor, Louis Rwagaju said there is need to nurture youth into responsible citizens if they are to play a meaningful role in national development. The campaign would continue in 15 sectors of the district in order to eradicate GBV cases and child abuse, said the mayor.
