National rugby side, Silverbacks, suffered a semi final 14-0 defeat to a select University team of Kenya to bow out of the Safaricom 7s tournament at the Nyayo national stadium on Sunday.
Having lost all the group B matches on Saturday, Silverbacks were hoping to make improvement and at least secure some consolation silverware in either the Bowl or Shield play-offs.
However, it wasn’t to be the case as they lost in the quarter finals of the Bowl match to Western Province side 0-48. In the Shield match, they lost 0-14 to Kenya’s University select side.
South Africa’s 7’s Elite Development squad won the 2012 Safaricom 7s after beating Kenya’s Morans 21-17 in the Main Cup final.
Kenya’s defense was beaten to the first try by Justin Geduld. But Tournament top points’ scorer and arguably man of the Match Dennis Ombachi brought the game to Kenya’s favor with his responsive try before the break.
After the breather, Ombachi fired Kenya to the lead with his second try through a special run and brilliantly touched down to push Kenya to a 10-7 lead as both two conversions went wide. Shaun Adendorf put South Africa back on the lead toward the end of the second half.
Kenya’s second team Shujaa captained by Collins Injera finished in third place after comfortably defeating Spain 21-07.
