APR, Rayon clash in Peace cup semis
MTN Peace cup (Today)
APR vs Rayon Sport (Regional stadium) 3:00pm
AS Kigali 0-0 Police
ALL roads lead to Kigali Regional stadium this afternoon when archrivals APR and Rayon Sport clash in mouth watering Peace Cup semi-final.
The Blues got to this stage the hard way after a 3-2 aggregate win over rivals Kiyovu despite dominating the second leg where they could have registered a bigger scoreline had it not been for their misfiring strikers.
Rayon Sport coach Jean Marie Ntwgabirwa has cautioned his side not to throw away chances like they did in the last round and expects a very tight match with few goals.
“It is always very tense and sometimes emotions get the better of the players when these two teams meet. But I have warned my players to keep their feet on the ground and concentrate on the game.
If we can create as many chances as we did against Kiyovu, then we have a chance” the former APR coach said.
By press time no team had recorded any injury worries for the game whose return leg is slated for Sunday.
APR won the trophy last year after defeating Police in extra time and there is a chance that the two teams might meet again in the final if APR edge out Rayon Sport and Police eliminate AS Kigali.
Last year’s beaten finalists Police were yesterday held to a goalless draw by AS Kigali in the first semi-final leg of the MTN Peace cup.
Both sides missed easy chances and Police require a scoring draw in Saturday’s return leg to reach the final which will be played on Tuesday next week.
The winner will represent Rwanda in next year’s CAF Orange Confederation Cup.
MTN Rwanda has sponsored the Peace Cup since 2008. The Peace Cup values are also anchored government’s policy to promote reconciliation among Rwandans.
The winners of the tournament will walk away with Rwf5m, the runners-up and third placed team will get Rwf3 and Rwf2m, respectively.
