Police arrest suspected fraudster
Police on Monday arrested a man in Gisozi, Gasabo District, for allegedly counterfeiting documents, including bank stamps and driving permits.
The 37-year old suspect (name withheld) was arrested after his housemates reported the matter to security authorities, citing issues of insecurity, according to police.
He is currently held at Gisozi police station.
At the time of his arrest, he was allegedly found in possession of 21 passport photos of people said to be his clients as well as Ugandan and Burundian driving permits and a Zigama CSS stamp.
He was also found with scanned documents, including national identity cards, travel documents and academic transcripts, police says.
“I am being framed for the crimes I didn’t commit; these documents are not mine; I am innocent,” he said.
In 2008, he was arrested and sentenced to four years in jail. He was released last July after completing his sentence.
Last year, 188 cases of counterfeit were recorded.
