NPC names final team for Europe tour
The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has named a final 12-man sitting volleyball team which will head to Europe for a series of friendly matches in preparation for the London’s Paralympic Games set for August 29-September 9.
The team has been under intensive preparations for three weeks under assistant coach Peter Karreman at NPC Gymnasium in Remera.
According to NPC secretary general, who also doubles to be London Games chef de mission Celestin Nzeyimana, the team will continue training regularly until they leave for a training tour in Holland and Germany on May 7 to 18.
“We want to use this tour to thoroughly prepare the national team. They will engage in several friendly matches with top European sides that have even qualified for London,” said Nzeyimana.
Rwanda won the three-day men’s African Sub-Saharan Sitting Volleyball Championships on Sunday (27 November), booking its ticket to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The team had no trouble in the group stage, as it cruised to wins over Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi- all in straight sets. Rwanda then beat Burundi, 3-1, in the semi-finals before beating Kenya, 3-0, in the final.
Apart from sitting volleyball team, the national Paralympics team will also be comprised of Hermas Cliff Muvunyi and Theogene Hakizimana who qualified 400m T46 race and power lifting respectively.
Two players Jean Rukundo and Jean de Dieu Bisangwa were dropped.
