Amavubi pocket Afcon bonuses
Amavubi players have been given USD800 (Rwf476000) each for their impressive performance against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 2013 nations’ cup qualifier last week.
The wasps did everything in the game but score, which left many fans in the fully packed Kigali regional stadium frustrated.
Speaking to the Times Sport yesterday, Ferwafa President Celestine Ntagungira, said all players had gotten USD500 (Rwf298000) plus the mandatory training allowance of USD 300 (178000).
“It is not true that players were not given bonuses. I can confirm to you that players were given USD800 each,” Ntagungira said before adding that a win would have fetched USD1000 as bonus.
The wasps will need to produce an even better performance against Nigeria in Abuja in June to boost their chances of playing in a second African nations’ cup.
Amavubi have a packed scheduled in June that includes 2014 qualifiers against Algeria and Benin.
Rwanda is pooled in Group H for the 2014 Brazil World Cup qualifying campaign alongside 2010 world cup debutants Algeria, Benin and Mali.
On June 1, Rwanda will play away to Algeria in Algiers before hosting Benin in Kigali a week later.
Seven days later, Rwanda will head to Abuja for the return leg fixture against Nigeria. A win or score draw will see Rwanda through to the final round of the qualifiers for the 2013 Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa.
