Musanze registers a rise in murder cases
Police in Musanze District is holding 13 people in connection with three murder cases that occurred within the last two days in various sectors of the area.
Ten people were arrested yesterday in Shingiro Sector, after they killed a 29 year old potato thief, identified as Nyirimanzi Hakunziyaremye. He died of severe wounds, inflicted on him by local residents.
In Gashaki Sector, a 30-year old man, Leonidas Sibomana, was arrested after he attacked his neighbours killing a woman and severely injuring two others, accusing them of bewitching his father, who died this week.
The deceased was identified as Verediana Nyiraburushyi, 55, while Martha Mukakarema and Simon Ntasugi, are nursing wounds at Ruhengeri hospital
“When his father died, he was heard saying he would avenge his death, there were rumours that his father had been bewitched because he died a sudden death. The young man came the day after with a machete and started cutting people in my family,” Ntasugi said from his hospital bed.
Police spokesman, Supt Theos Badege, condemned the incidents, and warned against mob justice.
“We have justice institutions, which punish whoever violates the law, or those involved in such crimes. Allegations of witchcraft are fueled by ignorance,” Badege advised.
In another incident, a woman who aborted an eight-month pregnancy, after being assisted by a community health worker in Busogo Sector, was arrested yesterday after one month on the run.
The health worker, Dieudonee Ndayambaje, had impregnated her in the absence of her husband.
Josephine Uwimana, accused the community health worker, of having given her abortion pills after impregnating her.
“Her husband fled from this area last year, they are married with three children, she aborted because Ndayambaje had an affair with her,” said one of the neighbours.
