KIGALI - Kigali City Council (KCC) authorities will, next week, hold a meeting with the developers of the Muhima Commuter Terminal to discuss new ways of completing the modern parking yard.

The terminal, to be built in the former Kigali Central Police Station in Muhima, was scheduled to be completed last month.

In an interview with The New Times, KCC vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Alphonse Nizeyimana, said that they would hold a round-table with the developers to discuss a new timetable for its completion.

Sekoko Hatari, the co-owner of the 200 million dollar project dubbed ‘Down Town Ltd’, which will also include shopping malls, apartments, hotels and restaurants had, last month, said that completion was delayed by KCC which was supposed to construct a road connecting the terminal to the city centre.

Nizeyimana said that the works to “construct the road are now in progress and will be complete within one month.”

“It was delayed by the road construction, which was also hampered by the expropriation of those who were in the proposed road demarcation,” said Nizeyimana.

“Expropriation takes a long time. Before constructing the road, we were supposed to expropriate some kiosks which were in the proposed road boundaries,” he added.

Once complete, the terminal would accommodate 507 cars, 169 minibuses and 145 buses.

 Currently, there are over 1,180 commuter vehicles operating in Kigali City.

The terminal will also feature a parking section for private cars and taxicabs.
