KIGALI - The Eastern Province Investors Forum, which brings together the business community of the Eastern Province, Friday, handed over a cheque of Rwf45m raised amongst themselves which will see some 480 families get modern housing.The money, which was delivered by the business community during a dinner gala to celebrate the victory of President Paul Kagame in last year’s Presidential elections, will help house underprivileged families in the province.

KIGALI - Members of the Chinese National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), on Friday, arrived in the country for a three-day official visit.The 12 member delegation was received at Kigali International Airport by Rwanda’s Deputy Speaker for the Chamber of Deputies, Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo.

KIGALI - The British High Commissioner to Rwanda, Benedict Llewellyn-Jones, OBE, yesterday afternoon paid a courtesy call to the Commissioner General of Police (CGP), Emmanuel K Gasana, at Police Head Quarters in Kacyiru.The CGP thanked the High Commissioner for the role various British institutions have played in professionalizing Police force.

KIGALI - The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs believes that by the end of this year, no Rwandan national will be referred to as a refugee.This follows an agreement on a secession clause between the government and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) that ensures that no Rwandan will be accorded refugee status by December 2011.

GICUMBI - Byumba Polytechnic Institute (IPB), yesterday, named 17 new board members. Prof. Anastase Shyaka is the new Chairman of the institute’s Board of Directors, replacing the long serving Bishop of Byumba Catholic Diocese, Servilien Nzakamwita.Dr.Fidele Ndahayo, a lecturer at the National University of Rwanda (NUR), is the new second vice chairman while Bank of Kigali-Gicumbi branch manager, Allen Muhongayire, is the third vice chairperson.

Rwamagana - A bus belonging toONATRACOM hit and killed a 21-year-old girl in Rwamagana town at around 9.am on Friday. The driver was travelling towards Uswahilini Street, when he realized he had passed his destination near the district hospital, according to an eye witness. He then put the bus in reverse, said police, and began to back up. The bus then hit the victim, who was on a motor bike, killing her instantly.

KAYONZA - Thirty three poor families in Nyamirama Sector, Kayonza District Friday received a cow each from Rwanda Red Cross (RRC) in a bid to economically empower them .Through the Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (VCA) programme, Nyamirama was identified as the Sector with most vulnerable residents in the district, prompting the Red Cross to support them.
