AIBA to fund two pugilists

Pascal Sibomana, one of Rwanda's top boxers.
BY BONNIE MUGABE

The world boxing body, AIBA has offered to fund an extra boxer at the upcoming World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy.

Initially, Rwanda had been offered one slot but according to the Technical Director of the Rwanda Amateur Boxing Association (Raba) Gashugi Kananura, AIBA has revised their offer to two.

Rwanda will now field two Light weight (60kg) boxers in Maurice Bikorimana and Niyitegeka Sibomana.

Prior to the World championships, the pair will under-go a two-week training camp in Milan. The training camp which starts August 10 will be fully funded by AIBA.

“AIBA will foot their air tickets and accommodation during the training camp and the championships,” confirmed Kananura.

The World boxing championship set to run from August 29-September 13 is the highest and most coveted competition in amateur boxing.

Meanwhile, Raba has revealed their readiness to further increase the number of participants in the championship should they garner enough funds.
