The 13th edition of the Rwanda cycling championship goes into its second last day as competitors make the 127km ride from Nyagatare to Ngoma today.
The cyclists were embodied in a heavy test yesterday as they competed in the 172km race from Kigali to Nyagatare in the Eastern Province.
The Kigali-Nyagatare route is undoubtedly the longest stretch of the tour and was yet to prove the tour’s best of the best.
On the final day, Wednesday, the competitors will ride 100km from Ngoma to Kigali and the ten-day tour de Rwanda will be concluded with a colourful ceremony, which will be held at Amahoro stadium.
On day six, the ‘Individual Time Control’ race that stretched from Kigali to and from Byumba was won by Kenya’s Stephen Mwangi who clocked 1hr:09.
Team Rwanda trio of Adrien Niyonshuti, Obed Ruvogera and Abraham Ruhumuriza followed on second, third and fourth position respectively.
The 2005 and 2006 Tour de Rwanda champion Abraham Ruhumuriza is still in command of the tour with a five second advantage over second placed Team Rwanda team mate Nathan Byukusenge while day one winner Nyandwi Uwase comes third.
The event, which is jointly sponsored by MTN Rwanda and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport climaxes tomorrow at Amahoro stadium.
